I am living with my uncle and his family while I work at the church in Renton. They had 3 cars for 3 people. You would think that I would be able to use one of these cars to get around! But unfortunately, everything is so spread out. Buses only cover very limited routes. And we all work in different parts of the city. So, we had to get me yet another car. Here’s what we got: a 1997 Toyota Camry, in excellent condition and reasonable gas mileage, for $ 1350. My uncle helped me check the car and buy it. Now, I can get around independently. That makes things so much easier!

Once a month our church hosts a big lunch for our seniors, and all leaders help serve the food. They had salad, Irish stew, garlic bread, and cheesecake. The event was a success! And a few hours later, you saw no trace of it: the hall was completely transformed for the youth ministry. The setup team is very efficient!

As you get around the city, one of the things you will find is all the fan merch for the Seattle Seahawks. The team mostly plays in Seattle but actually has their training camp in Renton where we live. They are crazy about this football team here. Even the licensing office was decked out with posters!

Of course, we are also being cautious right now during the spread of the Corona-Virus. I am fine and staying cautious, though I am not paranoid. But unfortunately, the US is not handling the situation very well. I went to the doctor this week to test for it because I had a sore throat. But they had no test kits. Only the major hospitals can test for the virus and they only do so if you show symptoms. I had the doctor test me for strep throat. In the end, I didn’t have it and could just take regular throat and cold medicine. This cost me $ 125. And I still could theoretically have Corona! I think I’m fine, but I am upset at how dysfunctional the US-healthcare system is. I will get my money reimbursed because I have travel insurance. But many Americans will not get reimbursements, nor can they take time off from work. They will not go to the doctor because they can’t afford to pay the fees or to pay rent if they stay away from work. It is sad. I hope that people stay safe and that whoever becomes president in the next election would support reforms in healthcare. Germany has democratic socialist policies that pay for better healthcare, infrastructure, unemployment, and college. I know that there is a lot of prejudice against “socialism” in the US because of the cold war. But “socialism” is not “communism” and neither one is it the same as “democratic socialism”. I am grateful that I have German “democratic socialist” benefits. And I hope Americans can have some of these benefits in the near future. But I choose not to spiral into politics. I understand that the situation is very complex. But at the same time, I’m here with open eyes. Whatever I see, I know that God sees it, too. I pray that he would protect my people and give me wisdom. Sometimes it’s best to speak, sometimes it’s best to not speak everything you think. And sometimes it’s best to act despite opposition. I pray that I would know how to tell the difference. In that sense, if you are in the US, stay healthy and be responsible. But don’t panic, either. Even if things get bad soon, life will go on. Keeping perspective helps to have a good attitude.

Zusammenfassung: Ich habe diese Woche ein Auto gekauft. Obwohl wir schon als Familie 3 Autos haben, war es notwendig, denn alles ist sehr weit verteilt und öffentliche Verkehrsmittel decken sehr wenige Routen ab. Jetzt habe ich einen 1997 Toyota Camry. Bei 1350 Euro kann ich mich nicht beklagen, es macht sehr viele Sachen einfacher!
Wir haben als Gemeinde einmal im Monat ein großes Mittagessen für unsere Senioren. Die Mitarbeiter haben schön gedeckt und servierten Salat, Irish Stew und schließlich Käsekuchen zum Dessert. Nach dem Event räumte ein Team alle Stühle und Tische weg und die Jugendgruppe baute ihre Sachen auf. Sehr effizient!
In Seattle und Umgebung sind sehr viele Leute Fans ihres lokalen Football Teams, den Seattle Seahawks. Ich habe viele Fanartikel in der Stadt gefunden. Sogar das Nummernschild-Amt war vollkommen eingedeckt!
All diese Sachen laufen sehr gut, doch der Coronavirus überschattet die ganze Situation etwas. Mir persönlich geht es bisher gut, doch ich finde das amerikanische Gesundheitssystem mehr als peinlich. Ich hatte Anfang der Woche Halsschmerzen und ging zur Klinik, um mich auf Corona testen zu lassen. Sie hatten keine Tests dafür, nur die großen Kliniken haben angemessene Ausstattung, und sie testen nur Leute mit Symptomen. Man untersuchte also meinen Hals auf andere Infektionen und entließ mich dann mit einer Rechnung von $ 125! Ich mache mir keine Sorgen um mich selbst, aber ich weiß, dass andere sich Sorgen machen. Sie haben im Gegensatz zu mir nicht den Luxus einer Reiseversicherung, zudem können sie es sich nicht leisten, wegen Krankheit von der Arbeit auszufallen. Viele Leute werden also nicht zum Arzt gehen. Ich will mich aufgrund dieser Umstände weder in Angst noch in Wut reinsteigern, doch ich hoffe, dass die Amerikaner bald Reformen in ihrem Gesundheitssystem haben. Die Präsidentschaftswahlen stehen an und sie haben die Möglichkeit, jemanden zu wählen, der Reformen angehen würde. Leider bestehen auch viele Vorurteile gegenüber “sozialistischen” Systemen, weil Leute Kommunismus fürchten. Doch diese Dinge sind nicht dasselbe und Angst ist ein schlechter Ratgeber. Auf jeden Fall ist es für mich eine Schule: Manchmal ist es dran, was zu sagen, manchmal eher nicht. Und manchmal muss man entgegen Opposition etwas tun. In all diesem hin und her erinnere ich mich daran, dass Gott alles sieht, was passiert. Ich bete, dass er uns beschützt und dass er mir Weisheit gibt, mich je nach Situation angemessen zu verhalten.
