One of my goals for 2019 is to make some significant progress on my children’s books and illustrations. So, as a professional step, I have just (yesterday!) joined the Society for Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI). I have put off this decision because I thought I wouldn’t have enough time to realistically commit. But since I have now understood that the “right” time will never come and is therefore now, I signed up. And I can already say that it was worth the registration fee: Access to insider market advice, critique groups, connections to other authors, classes, conferences, and more. It will take some time to go through all these
Of course, all the cool resources don’t do any good if I have not writings or art to publish. So I am getting my book “Somehow Something is Missing!” (SSIM) into shape for submission to publishers. That means I am working on the character designs and page layouts. I have been working at this for the past month and am still not done. But the drawings are starting to feel more “mature”, which is encouraging.
