Illustrations, or: Why I searched for a “passionate kiss” on Google

Illustrations, or: Why I searched for a “passionate kiss” on Google

I have until Friday to finish another milestone of illustrations. And, as I was recently working on this project, I found myself in an interesting situation: I was drawing the pictures for “Song of Songs”. For those of you who aren’t familiar, Song of Songs is like the wild romance novel of the Bible. It is the love story between King Solomon and a farm girl. The book has been interpreted as an allegory for God’s relationship to the church, or as a simple celebration of love and life. Either way, my job was to illustrate the major steps in the book. One of those steps was titled “wild romance”. So, how would I draw that? I don’t usually draw erotic depictions and the rest of the commission seemed to not call for an outright sex scene. So, how do you draw “wild romance” in a PG way? I eventually found myself searching for a “passionate kiss” on google. Since I don’t usually search for anything in that direction, it felt slightly awkward. But it got me enough visual reference to get the job done. And I’m satisfied with the results.
